How to Improve Your Curb Appeal

September 1, 2025/in Home Improvement/by Arocon

Your home’s exterior is more than just a backdrop—it’s the first impression your property makes on guests, buyers, and neighbors. Whether you’re preparing to sell or simply want to take pride in your property, improving your curb appeal can increase both value and satisfaction. Here’s how to elevate your home’s appearance with expert-recommended exterior upgrades that bring peace of mind and lasting beauty.

Key Takeaways

  • A well-maintained roof and gutters are essential to strong curb appeal and long-term protection.
  • Clean siding, fresh paint, and modern materials like fiber cement instantly enhance your home’s visual impact.
  • Strategic upgrades, such as new windows or attic ventilation, can improve both aesthetics and energy efficiency.

Start with a Clean and Healthy Roof

Your roof plays a critical role in both appearance and function. Moss-covered or stained shingles can make a home look neglected—even if the interior is pristine. A seasonal Roof & Gutter Tune-Up is a fast and affordable way to restore a tidy look. This service typically includes shingle replacement, gutter cleaning, resealing flashing, and photo documentation.

If your roof is aged or showing signs of wear, consider upgrading to architectural asphalt, cedar, slate, or metal roofing. Each offers distinct aesthetic and performance benefits, especially when installed by certified professionals.

Refresh Gutters and Downspouts

Clogged, rusted, or sagging gutters instantly draw the eye for the wrong reasons. Seamless gutters and professionally installed downspouts not only protect your foundation but also create clean lines that complement your home’s shape. Adding gutter guards also reduces future maintenance and keeps your exterior looking sharp.

Revitalize Your Siding

Siding covers the majority of your home’s exterior, making it one of the most impactful ways to boost curb appeal. Faded vinyl or warped panels send the wrong message about upkeep. Replacing old siding with premium materials like James Hardie fiber cement or LP SmartSide engineered wood can transform your home’s look.

Fiber cement siding is a top choice in the Mid-Atlantic due to its resistance to humidity, pests, and flame spread—all while mimicking the texture of real wood. Choose a color and style that complements your roofing and trim for a cohesive look.

Upgrade Your Windows for Style and Efficiency

Windows are visual focal points and energy performance drivers. Outdated or mismatched windows can make even a freshly painted exterior feel dated. Replacing old units with modern options from Vytex or ProVia provides a crisp, consistent look while improving insulation.

Frame styles and grille patterns should match your home’s architecture. For example, black frames work well on modern homes, while colonial grids enhance traditional facades. Don’t forget to consider energy ratings and Low-E coatings that reduce solar gain and fading.

Polish the Finishing Details

Small features make a big difference. Repainting soffits and fascia, updating house numbers, and repairing trim helps create a polished appearance. Lighting also plays a key role—installing new porch lights or walkway illumination highlights your home’s best features after dark.

Even upgrading your front door hardware or mailbox can help tie the exterior together. These details show care and consistency.

Trim Trees, Clean Walkways, and Keep Debris at Bay

Curb appeal isn’t just about what’s on the house—it’s also what surrounds it. Overgrown trees, cluttered porches, and dirty sidewalks can undercut even the most beautiful siding. Trim back branches, pressure wash walkways, and keep lawns clear of debris, especially in the fall.

Investing in seasonal maintenance like moss removal or gutter cleaning in the spring and fall can prevent long-term issues and preserve your home’s appearance year-round.

Consider a Ventilation Upgrade

Many homeowners overlook the impact of attic ventilation on both home performance and exterior condition. Inadequate airflow can cause heat buildup, leading to shingle damage and energy waste. Adding ridge vents or solar-powered fans during a roof service visit is a smart, subtle way to support both function and curb appeal.

Schedule a Professional Roof & Exterior Inspection

It’s easy to overlook problem areas when you see your home every day. That’s why a professional inspection can be so valuable. Certified roofers and exterior specialists provide clear feedback, photo reports, and tailored recommendations.

Arocon’s Roof & Gutter Tune-Up is a cost-effective place to start—providing both immediate visual improvement and long-term protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does curb appeal affect home value?

Improved curb appeal can increase home value by 5–11% depending on the upgrades and market conditions. It also shortens time on market when selling.

Should I replace my siding or paint it?

If siding is still in good shape, painting may be a viable option. However, if it’s warped, cracked, or faded beyond repair, replacement with fiber cement or engineered wood offers better returns.

Do new windows really improve curb appeal?

Yes—especially when they match your home’s architecture and trim color. New windows also improve energy efficiency and interior comfort.

What’s the best time of year to boost curb appeal?

Spring and fall are ideal for most exterior work. Cooler temperatures and lower humidity create the best conditions for paint, sealants, and roof work.

How often should I clean my gutters?

At minimum, twice a year—in the spring and fall. If your home is surrounded by trees, quarterly cleanings or installing gutter guards may be necessary.

10 Things to Look For in a Contractor

August 16, 2022/in Home Improvement/by Arocon

In honor of our 10 year anniversary this year, we would like to help you find the best contractor for your project! Here is a simple list of the 10 things we advise you to look for when looking for a contractor.

1. License

When looking for a contractor, it is important to find one that is licensed. This means that the contractor has met the state mandated qualifications for contractors. This is also important if you are looking to sell your house in the future, work done by an unlicensed contractor is not usually recognised in real estate transactions. You can find license holders on most state DLLR websites, for instance, you can find Maryland license holders online.

2. General Liability and Workers Comp Insurance

Insurance is a major factor when it comes to choosing a contractor. Your contractor’s insurance policy protects you as the homeowner from incurring responsibility for an injury sustained on your property.

3. Experience

Experience is important when it comes to choosing a contractor because you want to make sure that they are able to provide you with quality workmanship. You can ask your contractor questions like how long the have been in business, how many projects they do in a month, and if they have any references for their work.

4. References and a Positive Reputation

References and a positive online reputation is a good indication that the company has done significant work and that their customers are happy with their services. Beware of a “too perfect” looking reputation though. A 100% satisfaction rate could be a red flag indicating that the reviews posted are not from actual customers.

5. Steady and Trained Staff and Crew

Never be afraid to ask how long a company has been in business or how long an individual has worked for the company. Lengthy tenure can show that the company has a good reputation not only with customers, but within the company as well. Training is also important, you can ask questions like what licenses or special training’s the company or individual has received.

6. Turnaround Time

Once you speak with a company, turnaround time is also a good indicator of what kind of company you are speaking with. If the turnaround time is too short it may indicate that the company is sacrificing quality for speed. If the estimated length of completion is wildly different from other contractors there could be an issue. During busy seasons, turn around time could be between 3-4 weeks for a standard asphalt roof replacement, or even longer if a severe weather event has occurred.

7. Pricing

Pricing is an important to look for, and not for the reason you might be thinking. When searching for a contractor, you do not want a contractor that has the highest or the lowest pricing. Contractors should be competitive with pricing, but if the pricing seems too good to be true, it usually is. You also want to make sure you are comparing “apples to apples” when it comes to pricing. Different manufacturers or types of shingles can raise or lower costs.

8. Material Suppliers

A good way to check in with a contractor would be to check with the material suppliers. If the company has a good reputation with the people they work most closely with and often (suppliers), than it is a good indication that it will be a good company to work with.

9. Communication

From the beginning of contacting your contractor, you want to make sure that they are providing good communication. Did the office get back to you in a timely manner? Did they answer all of your questions? Did they confirm the appointment? Did your consultant answer all of your questions? If the answer is “no” to several of theses questions, it may be a good indicator that the company will not be able to have open communication with you during the process of your job.

10. Contract

Your contract will show a lot about your company. It will include most of the items listed above, it should show you their license number, answer questions about materials used, timelines, and a detailed contract can show you the experience of a company. If you have a vague or hard to understand contract, it might indicate that there are hidden fees or procedures.

When it comes to finding a contractor, no two projects are the same, because no two people are the same. Trust is a major factor when it comes to finding the right contractor, and like dating, it is important to find someone you are comfortable with. Never be afraid to ask as many questions as you might need to. At AROCON Roofing and Construction, our friendly and trained staff is available Monday through Saturday to ask any questions you might have for an upcoming project you might have!

DO’s & DON’Ts For Homeowners

February 17, 2022/in Home Improvement/by Arocon

You’ve finally purchased the home of your dreams! While you most likely aren’t over the excitement of this milestone, there are several things to keep in mind in order to successfully break in your new home. Keep reading for the important do’s and don’ts for a new homeowner:

DO Tend to Maintenance Necessities

Purchasing a new home also comes with the expense of handling your own repairs, instead of just calling your landlord. Although issues such as leaking plumbing, leaking gutters, or chipped siding seem small at first, they can evolve into larger problems in the future.

Save money and avoid expenses down the road by zapping maintenance problems from the get-go. As a rule of thumb, any issue that could put you or anyone in your home in danger if ignored should be tended to ASAP.

DO Hire Qualified Contractors

When it comes to maintenance repairs and improvements for your new home, some tasks are not meant to be DIY projects, no matter how qualified you feel with a toolbox.

Your home is an investment, and it is important to have those who know what they’re doing handle jobs such as electrical or roofing work so that costly mistakes and injuries do not occur. Work done by a qualified and licensed professional can fix problems with your home, while simultaneously increasing its value.

DO Get Insurance

Although you may want to, the topic of mortgage and insurance cannot be avoided when it comes to buying a new home. You are required by your mortgage lender to purchase homeowner’s insurance, enough to replace the entire property in the case of a total loss.

In addition, if you live with a significant other, or a child who depends on you to pay the mortgage, you must have life insurance. This will name your dependent(s) as a beneficiary so they do not lose the house in the event of your unexpected death.

DO Stay Organized

With all of this maintenance work, contractors, and talk of insurance policies, it can be easy to lose track of things. Keep a binder or file folder with appropriately labeled sections including contact information for good contractors and realtors in your area, maintenance receipts, and insurance information.

Having all of the related documents on hand and in one place will save time when new maintenance issues arise, or when it comes time to sell your first home.

Additionally, keeping receipts from home improvements helps to increase your home’s basis, and boost your tax-free earnings on the sale of your home.

DON’T Forget to Set Up Utilities

Make sure that all of the utilities are under your name, and that each provider has your correct billing information. This includes the electric and gas companies, the county for sewage and water if it provides both, and cable and Internet providers if you want to have either of these in your new home.

Also find out if the town you live in does garbage and recycling pick up, or if you need to contract it on your own.

Getting utilities taken care of in the beginning will save you a lot of headache once you’ve settled in.

DON’T Waste Money on Expensive Furnishings

You may be moving into your new home from a one or two room apartment, where the furnishings were either included, or were not a huge responsibility due to the size of the place. Even a relatively small house can seem huge at first, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of buying the first couch you fall in love with in order to bring nights of watching Netflix from the floor to an end.

If you really feel the need to fill the space quickly, go with less expensive items from discount department stores, or even see if friends or family are looking to get rid of a chair or two. Avoiding debt from buying that luxury couch right off the bat will save you money to furnish your dream home in the future.

DON’T Take on Too Many Projects at Once

With the excitement of moving into your first home, it’s easy to become over-ambitious and try to check every project off your list at once. Although this may seem productive at the time, taking on too much will likely lead to stress and setbacks instead of completed projects.

Take the time to plan out how long each project will take and how much each will cost. Then decide on a good time to fit each project into the rest of your schedule. A set timeline will prevent you from taking on too much, and will allow you to enjoy your home while making improvements.

Be sure to keep these tips in mind as you settle into your new home. At AROCON, we have the means to help you with several of your needs as a homeowner, including roof and gutter repair, siding maintenance, and other necessities.

Congratulations on becoming a new homeowner!

Read This Before You Hang Your Holiday Lights

November 30, 2019/in Home Improvement/by Arocon

Getting your home ready for the holidays can be one of the most fun things you’ll do all year – if you do it right. Gathering the family together on a wintry evening to witness all of your hard work, when you turn everything on, is what memories are made of.

Nearly six thousand people are admitted to the hospital each year, however, for injuries related to attaching holiday decorations to the outsides of their homes. So stay safe and enjoy this holiday season by following these four, straightforward tips for how to properly hang lights:

1. Hang holidays lights on a windless day when the weather is dry. Please use extreme caution and make sure a second person is on hand any time you mount a ladder, especially in wet conditions. Climbing the rungs of a ladder during a downpour is dangerous, even when you’re not carrying a limp cardboard box overflowing with holiday decorations.

2. Work in stages, around a plan. Before the day upon which you plan to actually put up your festive lights, lay some groundwork by staging reliable extension cords in strategic spots and firmly attaching any necessary hooks or hangers. Chances are you’ve got a busy schedule, so working in stages can help you fit in your decorating duties around the rest of the day. Planning out which lights go where and making sure you’ve got enough of them to go around can save unnecessary trips to the store and back. Anchoring your holiday lights correctly will keep you from climbing around on ladders to fix things, later on.

3. Test your lights before they go up. Few things in life are as frustrating as spending hours hanging a string of lights only to find they don’t work. Opting for shorter strings of lights will cut down on the amount of time needed to pull out any section that might decide to stop working. Decrease the risk of moisture intrusion by using duct or electrical tape to seal the connectors that attach one string of lights to its neighbor.

4. Use appropriate materials. Avoid overloading any one socket by plugging all your lights into it. Also make sure to use an extension cord that’s thick enough to power all the lights it’s supposed to supply energy to without overheating or causing a fire. Select extension cords that are rated for outdoor use and tested by an independent industrial body such as Underwriters Laboratory (UL).With some foresight and diligence, the ritual of hanging holiday lights can be a fun and safe time for everyone involved.

At AROCON Roofing and Construction, our experts can help you with all your roofing and home improvement needs! Regardless of whether you just need a quick roof tune-up or a brand new roof, our trained technicians can provide you with customized service to simplify your home improvement project.

Disaster Preparedness For Your Home

September 8, 2016/in Home Improvement/by Arocon

Storms, floods, tornadoes, and hurricanes, oh my! With countless other storms on the news lately, it is more important than ever to be prepared. So how do you protect your home from these environmental aggressors? Read on for tips for preparing your family and home for an impending storm:

Thunderstorms:

With thunderstorms often comes the damaging effects of strong winds and lightning. If you know a storm is approaching, remove any dead branches or overhanging tree branches from the area surrounding your home. This will prevent the wind from knocking these` into your house during the storm. To protect against lightning, make sure your entire house has surge protection, and unplug any unnecessary appliances before the storm.

Flooding:

If you live in an area that is prone to flooding, or if you have a basement that often gets flooded, remove any valuables from this area. Clear the floor of any boxes, papers or furniture that you don’t want to get wet. Also, make sure this area is cleared of plugs or appliances, which can cause electrocution if they come in contact with water.

Hailstorms:

Hail can range from the size of a pea to a grapefruit and can cause major damage to your roof. Protect your home by installing hail-proof shingles with a Class 4 UL rating, which measures the impact resistance of a roofing material. This will be a tricky job to DIY, so be sure to contact a licensed roofing contractor to install the shingles for you.

Hurricanes/Tornadoes:

While hurricanes and tornadoes are two very different weather systems, they can cause similar damage to your home. If your home is at risk during a powerful storm like this, make sure that your entire family has enough food and safety supplies to last at least two weeks. Strong winds and flooding, and even hail can be expected, so follow the steps above to prepare your home. Also make sure that you know where all your valuables and important documents are and that they are in a central location, in case you need to evacuate your home on short notice. Bring inside any outdoor furniture you have, and make sure it is stored in an area that won’t get flooded.

In a more serious and damaging storm like a hurricane or tornado, make sure you monitor the progress of the weather on NOAA, which will provide the most up to date and accurate information for your zip code.

And of course, in any storm it is wise to have a first aid kit handy, as well as flashlights with extra batteries, candles and matches, and a stockpile of packaged foods and water. If you have pets, make sure you have a similar kit for them as well. Map out exit routes in case of any of these hazards listed above, and make sure your entire family has a copy of the emergency exit route and knows the phone numbers to call in case of an emergency.

When it comes to your family’s safety, AROCON is always there for you. For help preparing your roof or exterior home for a storm, contact us today.

Strengthen Your Relationship During a Remodel

August 23, 2015/in Home Improvement/by Arocon

Whether you’re putting on a new deck or building a whole new home, remodeling can be a very exciting and joyous time. You’re changing your home into a space that you’ve always dreamed about. Home remodels, however, aren’t always as simple as they seem. As you may have experienced, the stress of constant chaos in your home can really cause a strain on your personal relationship. So how do you prevent the stress of a home remodel from affecting your relationship? Can your love really survive such a daunting task?

Follow our guide below to ensure that your home and your relationship stay in excellent shape during this hectic time:

Budget First

Money can be the source of a lot of conflict between couples, particularly during a house remodel. The first task you should complete before doing anything else is deciding on the budget for your project. Set this number in stone after careful discussion with your partner and make sure you stick to it. That way, everyone is clear about the financial plan from the beginning.

The 51-49 Split

Someone needs to be in charge. It can be extremely difficult, if not impossible to split all the work perfectly 50-50. So instead, the one of you who would prefer to have a bit more control and deciding power should have 51% of the power, while the other partner has 49%. The one with 51% is able to veto decisions made by the other after discussion and has the ultimate say in the remodel. However, this does not mean they can wield power like a dictator. Make sure the basis of every decision is a respectful discussion with your partner.

Schedule

Set a timeline for this project. Map it out on a calendar that the whole family has access to, and make sure that you all stick to it. If a project drags on, this can be a major source of stress for the family. And if this is out of your hands, remember that patience is key.

Housing Plan

If you are remodeling enough of your home that you need somewhere else to stay, make sure you plan ahead for this. Book a hotel for a few nights if your renovating your bedroom or doing an extensive bathroom remodeling project. If you need a space to stay long-term, try to arrange to stay with some close friends or neighbors. Or, make sure that there is always a room available for the family to stay during the remodeling.

Plan for the Kids

As much as you may love them, your children can definitely add to the stress of a home project, because they’ll want to run around and play and this can get in the way of the work. Consider arranging some sleepovers or play dates for your younger children during the period of remodeling. Even getting them out of the house for a few hours a week can relieve a lot of the pressure that you feel to take care of them and also manage the project.

Couple’s Time

Make sure you set aside time just for the two of you. With the stress of a home remodel, it can feel like you are being pulled in all different directions. Before the project even gets started, map out set dates on the calendar where you and your partner will get out of the house and have a date night. Arrange a babysitter for the kids ahead of time, and do your best not to cancel these dates. Remembering to spend time together will be crucial to getting through this stressful period stronger.

Small Surprises

If you sense that the stress of the remodel is weighing on your partner, try making some small gestures like bringing home flowers or food from their favorite restaurant for dinner. Remember that you two are a team, and you should treat each other with a lot of care and attention during this time.

Me Time

Of course, along with spending quality stress-free time together, you both need to have some time alone to relax and unwind. Try to get out of the house or spend some time alone for an hour or two a day just to clear your head.

Hiccups Plan

So you planned, you scheduled, and your home improvement project still took an unexpected turn. Veering from the schedule is normal, and in fact it is quite likely to happen. Real life rarely goes according to plan. Your schedule should serve as an outline for the path you want your project to take, but if things change don’t freak out. Try to embrace the change and just work around it. Being a little more flexible will help keep your stress levels down, which can only help your relationship and your home in the long run.

The Back-Up Plan

If all else fails, do not be afraid to see a couples’ counselor. It’s their job to listen to your issues and help you work through them diplomatically and respectfully. A home remodel is stressful for anyone; you don’t need to let your relationship suffer for the sake of your home.

Remember that your relationship with your family is more important than any home project. If you have to extend the project to make it easier on everyone, do it. And don’t be afraid to ask for help. Visit some of our older posts on everything from home decor to different types of windows  for other ways that AROCON can make your home project a little easier.

The Best Way to Work With Your HOA

August 23, 2015/in Home Improvement/by Arocon

A Homeowner’s Association, or HOA, is an organization of property owners that administer rules and uphold covenants of a certain subdivision, development, or condominium complex. The rules of a HOA affect or limit what homeowners can do on the property that they own. Historically, HOA’s have been somewhat difficult to deal with, but they are also becoming increasingly common in residential communities. So how do you ensure that you are in compliance with your HOA when making home improvements?

HOA bylaws often control the number of rooms in a house, the number of fences that can be present on a property, building materials, and even details as minor as the color that a homeowner can paint their house. As a homeowner, it is important that you are well aware of each of these bylaws and any other stipulations that a particular HOA has. One of the best ways to stay informed is to attend the community meetings and keep up-to-date on anything new that is happening in the community.

Sometimes, an issue may be brought to the attention of the HOA through one single resident. Befriending fellow members of the HOA and the residents in their community can help you establish goodwill with your HOA. If there is an issue, fellow residents will be more likely to come and discuss the problem with you first, before resorting to legal action.

Be aware of the HOA’s regulations and pay their dues on time. Although data has seen many of these rates increasing over time, the cost of not paying them is much higher. If dues are not paid on time, the HOA can foreclose your home. In some unfortunate circumstances, a HOA has not always had the best intentions at heart. Some HOA directors have even purchased the properties that they have foreclosed on, at a much lower price.

The key to working with a HOA is to stay one step ahead of the regulations. Know the rules and follow them, and make sure your home improvement contractor does too. If you do this, you can ward off any legal battles or other inconveniences in the future.

Best Sites For Home Improvement Inspiration

August 23, 2015/in Home Improvement/by Arocon

Summer is prime time for home improvement and renovations. Perhaps you are redoing your patio, or you simply want to freshen up your furniture and outdoor plants for a brighter look. But where should you start? Browsing some of these sites and social media pages may provide you with just the inspiration you need to get going with your home improvement project!

Pinterest

Of course, Pinterest is one of the first choices for people looking for design inspiration. It’s simple to create an account if you don’t already have one, and Pinterest “boards” allow you to separate your pins by category. For example, you could have one board labeled “Lawn Furniture Ideas” with different chaise lounges or colorful pillows to add some color to your yard. Or perhaps “Patio Remodel”with DIY patio projects and flower planters that catch your eye. Pinterest is the ideal pick for someone who has a lot of ideas and wants to stay organized.

And if you happen to find a few boards that really inspire you, you can follow them so that you receive updates whenever they pin new content!

Porch.com Instagram

Porch’s Instagram account features colorful images of different interior and exterior home settings that really pop. Scrolling through Instagram on your phone is the perfect time to get some inspiration for your renovation project. The page is filled with ideas for everything from a kitchen remodel to a backyard picnic area. Save the pictures that inspire you the most by simply taking a screenshot on your phone and storing them in a dedicated folder for home improvement ideas.

Houzz Instagram

Along with their blog, Houzz’s Instagram page also offers a lot of beautiful and creative design ideas for both interior and exterior home. Pictures of colorful living room designs and interesting new color combinations dominate the page and provide the perfect inspiration for a home remodel. And check out the Houzz blog for a steady stream of inspirational content and unique design ideas.

Better Homes and Gardens Instagram

Check out this page for a steady stream of gorgeous outdoor picnic tables and patio decor, along with sleek kitchen designs and the added bonus of yummy food pictures, which everyone loves. The variety of posts on this page makes it a great pick for someone whose style often changes and is looking to refresh their home.

Follow Your Favorite Influencers

Everyone’s style is different when it comes to home improvement projects and remodels. There are so many options out there for beautiful furniture and different pieces for both the interior and exterior of your home. By browsing through different style influencers on social media, you can pick and choose pages that have a similar taste to your own to follow. For example, Eddie Ross, the East Coast Editor of Better Home and Gardens has an Instagram page that may appeal to those who love bright colors and unique patterns in their home design, while Sarah Fogle’s (of Ugly Duckling DIY) Instagram page features simple DIY projects for home improvement that homeowners can try for themselves.

Whatever your style is, there are plenty of resources out there for you to get inspired and start improving your home.  And as always, contact AROCON for your roofing and home improvement needs!
