The 7 Deadly Sins of Roofing

August 23, 2012/in Uncategorized/by Arocon

Repairing or replacing your roof can often be a confusing process. Your roofing contractor will be trained in the different methods to fix or replace your roof, but you should definitely learn about roofing techniques in order to ensure that your contractor is using the most up-to-date methods with the proper techniques. By educating yourself about the variety of possible ways you can have your roof repaired or installed, you can work with your contractor to assure that he or she knows what you want for your roof.

In addition to knowing what the best roofing methods are, it’s important to know what can and will damage your roof. Here are a list of the seven deadly roofing sins:

1. Walking on the roof: Not only is walking on your roof dangerous, if you aren’t a trained professional, you could actually damage your roof. Walking on your roof can strip shingles of the coating that prevents leaking, and can even dislodge them, creating gaping holes that will allow rainwater and debris to enter into your home. However, roofing contractors are trained so that they can minimize the damage when they are on top of your roof.

2. Bad nailing technique: There are many different ways to incorrectly nail a roof. For example, “high nailing” — which occurs when the roofer inserts the nail too high — can lead to the bottom part of the shingle to become detached from the rest of the roof, resulting in unfortunate leaks. On the other hand, “shiners”  — which are nails that are inserted too low onto the roof  — can be visible from the ground which is not only unsightly but may also lead to leaks. In addition, over driven nails can tear at the shingles and decrease wind resistance. To ensure that your nails are driven into your roof correctly, your contractor should spend some time before the roof job gauging the pressure of the compressor used to insert the nails.

3. Covering damaged shingles instead of replacing them: Although it may seem like a good way to cut costs, the best way to fix a roofing problem involving old shingles is to remove them and replace them with new shingles. Covering old shingles with new ones will result in the collection of dirt and dampness in between the shingles, which will cause your roof to become damaged much faster than if the old shingles had been removed. When working with a contractor, check to make sure that he or she has removed the old shingles before installing new shingles.

4. Improper flashing installation: The metal flashing on the roof helps prevent moisture from entering your house from areas where your roof comes in contact with walls and chimneys. Avoid using old flashing to save money, because it will cost you more money in the long run because old flashing will break apart more rapidly. Also, talk with your contractor about the methods that he or she plans to use to install the flashing. If the flashing is not aligned properly or is not fastened securely, your roof may not be able to protect your house during heavy rainstorms and snowfalls.

5. Poor ventilation: Many homeowners often forget about the necessity of proper ventilation when considering roofing replacements. If your roof isn’t ventilated very well, it can result in the build-up of moisture and trap heat into your house. Unless you enjoy paying higher air conditioning bills in the summer, be sure to talk to your contractor about how he or she can improve your roofing ventilation.

6. Shingles that don’t extend outward over the eaves: The eaves are the section of the roof that overhangs or meets the building’s walls. If the shingles don’t overhang the eaves by at least half-an-inch, it could result in shingles becoming separated from the rest of the roof and blowing off.

7. Not researching the roofing contractor beforehand: With multiple roofing companies to choose from, how do you determine which contractors to work with? Confirm that the company is legitimate by checking that the company has a permanent address and workers’ compensation and liability insurance. You can also read reviews posted on sites like Angie’s List and Google to see what previous customers have said about the company. Choosing the cheapest contractor without checking the quality of his previous work could end up costing you a lot of money if you have to hire another company to fix his shoddy work.

Regardless of whether you are looking to do a routine roof repair or are planning to completely replace your roof, committing one of the the seven deadly roofing sins can prevent you from having the hassle-free roof you want. The roof is an integral part of the house in insulating your home and protecting your house from the elements. Working with a reputable roofing company, such as AROCON Roofing and Construction, is one of the best ways to ensure that you get all of your roofing problems solved!

Say Yes to the Door

August 23, 2012/in Uncategorized/by Arocon

A front door is a lot like a wedding dress. How, you may ask? The dress says a lot about the bride wearing it and the door you choose communicates your personal tastes to your visitors.

The front door also plays a large role in enhancing curb appeal and protecting your home from strangers as well as the elements.

So how do you choose the perfect front door for your home? There are several factors that you should consider when deciding which type of door fits your home’s needs:

Material

The material you choose will affect the appearance, sturdiness, and maintenance of your door.

  • Wood. Wooden doors come in many varieties, along with many different grain patterns. Higher quality wood doors are usually thicker, with more detailed moldings. Wood doors that are properly installed give off a classic, beautiful vibe. Generally, wood doors are more expensive than other materials, but the natural look can be worth the price.

  • Steel. Steel is typically less pricey compared to other materials. Higher quality steel doors are also more resistant to weathering and denting. However, under direct sunlight, steel doors can become uncomfortably hot to touch. Steel doors are also usually less energy efficient, compared with other door materials, but you can request your contractor to install a steel door with an insulated core for improved energy efficiency.

  • Fiberglass. Fiberglass doors are very resilient and low-maintenance, and can be made to look and feel very similar to a wood door. They are energy-efficient and won’t rust or dent.  There is a wide range of prices for fiberglass doors depending on the hardware, glazing and decorative elements selected. In addition, fiberglass doors usually have the longest warranties.

Color

From standard black to colonial red to neon green, your color options for your front door are endless. Here are some tips to help you decide on what color works best:

  • Coordinate. Coordinate with the colors of the exterior of your home. Take into consideration the color of the trim and the siding surrounding the door to prevent the hues from clashing when deciding on the color of your door.

  • Be Conservative. If you will be selling your home in the near future, choose a conservative color like a hunter green or black. As much as you may love having a hot pink door, it could turn off potential buyers from even considering your home, lowering your house value.

  • Contrast. Consider using a contrasting color for your door to help it stand out from the rest of the house. Using contrasting colors, which can be found by looking at the colors opposite each other on a color wheel, can give your door the pop of color needed to welcome you and your guests into your home.

Decorative Elements

In addition to the functional elements of the door, you can choose to further accessorize your front door with other ornamental elements, such as:

  • Sidelights. Sidelights, which are panes of glass set alongside doors and windows, can allow natural light to enter your home. Sidelights can be used to frame and complement your door selection.

  • Clavos. Clavos are spikes that are typically found on gates and doors. They can be used to add a touch of rustic appeal to a front door and tend to complement traditional-style homes as opposed to the more contemporary houses.

  • Decorative glass. You can incorporate beautiful glass elements into your door design for an elegant, tasteful look. Decorative glass comes in a wide variety of patterns, colors, textures, and styles.

Picking the perfect front door for your home doesn’t have to be stressful. Discuss your preferences with a home improvement contractor from a reputable company like AROCON Roofing and Construction to bring your vision for your home to reality.

Not Satisfied With Your Contractor?

August 23, 2012/in Uncategorized/by Arocon

You have selected a contractor to repair the deck in your backyard and signed the contract. But then, the contractor does a lousy job. Or he leaves the project unfinished. Or he creates a big mess in your yard and never cleans it up. The bad contractor scenarios are endless.

Here are some steps you can take if you aren’t happy with your home improvement contractor:

  • Review the written contract. Look over the contract you signed with your contractor and read what it says about complaints and warranties. How does the contract stipulate how you should register complaints?

  • Document the work (or lack of work) and damage that your contractor has already done. Keep track of the days and times your contractor has worked on the project and the specifications and details that you gave him about your expectations for the project. Also, record all of the costs you have incurred on the project and your attempts to contact him, if he has cut off communication with you. Take photographs of shoddy work and other aspects of the project that you are unhappy with. If you have photographs of your home prior to when the home improvement project began, collect those as well. Keeping track of all the information regarding your project is important to use as evidence when confronting your contractor and in court, should it be necessary.

  • Assertively confront your contractor. Before expressing your dissatisfaction with your contractor, create a written document discussing the problems with the home improvement project, what you want the contractor to do, and the timeline in which you want the contractor to implement solutions. When talking with the contractor, explain why you are unhappy with his work, and get him to sign a document detailing the solutions that you have both agreed on, so that if he flakes, you have written proof. Remember to avoid writing an online review before talking with your contractor. This often can make the situation worse and can really damage the reputation of the contractor.

  • Fire the contractor, if necessary. If you feel that the contractor will not provide you the quality work that you requested, you should fire him. It can get messy if you paid for his services upfront, because he may not be willing to refund your money depending on the contract you signed with him, so you might have to take legal action.

  • Warn other consumers about the contractor. Register your complaints with the BBB. You can help prevent other consumers from having a botched home improvement project on their hands.

  • Have another contractor finish the project. Take time to carefully look over reviews before selecting another contractor. This contractor can review the quality of the other contractor’s work and also help you assess the monetary value of the damage, which is information you can use in court if you decide to take legal action against your first contractor.

Dealing with a bad contractor can be very difficult and time consuming, so it’s important to research your contractor before signing the first contract. At AROCON Roofing and Construction, we pride ourselves on providing quality finished products and great customer service throughout the entire duration of your home improvement project.

Installing Skylights

August 23, 2012/in Uncategorized/by Arocon

Natural sunlight is an amazing miracle. According to the Vitamin D Council, exposure to the sun will boost your energy and mood, helping you fight stress and negative feelings.

Did you know that you can soak in the benefits that only natural sunlight can offer from the luxury of your home with skylights? If you have considered or are looking to install skylights, here is a brief primer to educate you about the perks that come with having skylights and all of the materials and shapes that you can choose from!

Benefits of Adding Skylights to Your Home

In addition to the benefits that installing skylights will have on your mood, there are many other advantages that come along with having skylights in your home.

  • Getting rid of mold and mildew. Sunlight is one of the best killers of mold and mildew, which thrive in dank and dark conditions. The extra sun that enters your home through the skylights will disinfect your home and help reduce the buildup of mold and mildew.

  • Increasing energy efficiency. By decreasing your home’s dependency on artificial sources of lighting, you can decrease your electricity usage. In addition, if you choose tinted skylights, they will absorb the incoming solar radiation, further insulating your home and reducing your energy bills.

  • Ventilating your home for improved air quality. Inferior air quality is one of the biggest triggers for respiratory conditions like asthma. Improper ventilation results in stagnant air in your home. By installing a ventilated skylight, you can cycle air through your home so that you can breathe cleaner, fresher air.

Glazing Material for Your Skylights

Now that you’ve recognized the many benefits associated with skylights, it’s time to choose the material you want for your skylights. Here are two of the most common skylight glazings:

  • Plastic glazing.  Many homeowners choose plastic glazing because of its more affordable cost. Because many plastics will allow ultraviolet (UV) rays, which is a known carcinogen, into your home, if you choose plastic glazing, it may be wise to coat the glaze with a protective film that will limit the amount of UV rays that enter your home.

  • Glass glazing. Although glass glazing tends to be more pricey, it is generally more durable than plastic glazing. The glass used in skylights is usually tempered or laminated, meaning that if the glass breaks, it won’t break into sharp pieces that could potentially harm people when it falls down. Also, tempered and laminated glass is more impact-resistant, reducing the likelihood of the glass breaking in the first place.

Skylight Shapes

Have you ever thought about what you want your skylights to look like? It’s important to keep the style of your roof in mind when selecting the type of skylight you want for your house. Check out some of the shapes that you can choose from:

  • Tubular skylights. Tubular skylights are rounded and bring sunlight into the home through a tube which includes light collectors. Because tubular skylights tend to be smaller compared with other skylights, they can be designed and installed to have little impact on the overall architectural design of your home.

  • Warped plane skylights. A warped plane skylight has glazing which is flat on the lower side and concave on the higher side. These skylights can effectively capture natural sunlight through its unique shape.

  • Pyramidal skylights. The elevated design of the pyramidal skylights provides flexibility in the placement of installation because it lets incoming light enter from multiple angles as opposed to only through one angle with a flat skylight. The raised quality of pyramidal skylights also prevents leaves and debris from collecting on the skylight.

Selecting the right skylights for your home can be daunting. You can talk with a contractor from a home improvement company like AROCON to discuss what types of skylights you are looking for that would best suit your home. Your contractor can give you recommendations based on the style of your home and your personal preferences.

4 Energy-Efficient Window Improvements

August 23, 2012/in Uncategorized/by Arocon

Along with barbeques, pool parties, and picnics, the summertime also brings increased air conditioning costs as homeowners struggle to keep their homes cool. One way to spend less money on your home’s air conditioning bill this summer is by installing energy efficient windows. Before purchasing new windows, you should always check the energy performance ratings to find windows that will block solar radiation and lessen your home’s dependency on AC. If you aren’t in the market for new eco-friendly windows, you can still make your current windows more energy efficient without breaking the bank.

Check out these four great ways you can help your existing windows absorb less heat and  lower your AC costs this summer:

  1. Install window awnings. Window awnings can block the sunlight from directly penetrating into the window, resulting in less heat entering the home.  According to the U.S. Dept. of Energy, window awnings can “reduce solar heat gain in the summer by up to 65% on south facing windows and 77% on west-facing windows.” Because awnings need ventilation in order to prevent hot air from becoming confined in the area around the window, make sure there are openings on the sides of the awning. In addition, you can choose to install awnings that can open to the top or sides for extra ventilation.

  2. Tint Your Windows. By covering the exterior of your window with reflective film, you can prevent harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from entering your home. Not only will reducing the amount of sunlight that enters your home decrease the temperature of your home, it will also prevent your interior furniture from fading under direct sunlight as an added perk. Tinting will be most effective in blocking heat from windows that are facing east and west due to their relationship to the sun’s orientation.

  3. Add mesh screens. In addition to serving as a barrier to pesky mosquitos and other bugs, mesh screens can disperse the heat from the sun. When you install mesh screens to your existing windows, make sure that they cover the expanse of your entire window to block as much solar radiation as possible.

  4. Caulk your old windows. Seal in the cracks around your windows with a quality caulking job to prevent the cool air in your home from leaking out. Not only will caulking make your home more energy efficient, it will also increase the lifespan of your windows. Caulking will also keep your home warmer in the winter, so you can benefit from a caulking job done well all year round.

You can either DIY your own projects or you can work with a home improvement contractor to increase the energy efficiency of your windows. Talk with an AROCON window contractor about personalized steps that you can take to improve your windows to decrease your AC costs and keep your home cool at the same time.

Your Guide to Selecting a Quality Contractor

August 23, 2011/in Uncategorized/by Arocon

You have finally made the decision to make renovations on your home. You have the funds. You know what you want done. Now, all you have to do is select a contractor to do the job. However, this step is the most crucial step of the home improvement process. No matter how much funds you have or how grand your desired designs are, only a quality contractor can turn your dreams into a reality. For this reason, you must be educated on how to select a quality contractor.

Luckily, this guide covers the essential information you need to select a quality contractor.

The first step to selecting any quality contractor is to make sure they are licensed. Licensed contractors must uphold certain standards to maintain their status, so you can be assured that they perform quality work. Aside from guaranteed quality, a licensed contractor means a legal renovations. In many states, it is illegal for unlicensed contractors to perform renovations. So, when considering contractors, make sure they are licensed to avoid spotty work and legal problems!

After ensuring that your contractor is licensed, the next step you should take is inquiring about their past work. Research their websites and other review sites, such as Home Advisor, for customer testimonials. Customers will be brutally honest about work done to their homes—especially if it was bad work. Finding evidence of quality work is an essential part of selecting a quality contractor. Doing so can be the difference between obtaining your dream home and getting tricked into hiring a less-than-stellar contractor!

Now that you have inquired about licenses and researched customer reviews, your next step should be inquiring about materials used. No matter how talented a contractor is, poor quality equipment will always result in poor quality work. Any worthwhile contractor will be more than knowledgeable of the quality of material they use.  In fact, many contractors take pride in giving their customers top of the line materials. If your desired contractor tries to avoid this question, send them packing!

The final step you should take when selecting a contractor is comparing their prices with competitors. Naturally, you will want to get a good deal, but there are other factors you should consider. For instance, if your contractor’s prices are considerably lower than all competitors, you should consider someone else. Chances are that this too good to be true estimate is just that: too good to be true. The low price contractor is most likely hiding fees or using poor-quality materials. On the other hand, you don’t want to select a contractor that is charging ridiculous amounts. They are likely trying to take advantage of your willingness to spend, and would likely take the price down if you refused. So, when selecting a contractor, make sure the prices are both fair, and feasible. Otherwise, you could end up sinking money into poor work, or paying ridiculous amounts for jobs that could have been done cheaper.

Home renovations should be a positive experience. Unfortunately, there are some contractors who only want money, and they are willing to rip you off along the way. For this reason, you should put a lot of thought into your contractor selection. Inquire about licensing, research customer reviews, ensure quality equipment, and compare prices! Following these steps should ensure that your home gets the quality renovations that it needs.

The Pros & Cons of Installing Solar Panels

August 23, 2011/in Uncategorized/by Arocon

Solar panels have skyrocketed in popularity over the past decade. At the forefront of the renewable energy movement, solar panels have the ability to positively impact the environment, and lessen the amount of electricity used. However, the decision to install solar panels on your home’s roof should not be made lightly, as installation can be costly. Before making a decision on solar panels, consider the following pros and cons.

Con: The Sun Doesn’t Always Shine

Solar Panels depend on the sun to produce energy. Without it, they can be rendered useless. Long periods of overcast weather can really damper their effectiveness. Energy sources should be dependable, so relying on one that depends on the weather can be inconsistent. The conditional nature of solar panels should be taken into consideration before installation and having an electrical back-up is recommended.

Pro: Virtually Unlimited Power Source.

While the sun isn’t always shining, it is always there. Unlike other energy sources which require exhaustible resources, solar panels draw on the virtually unlimited power of the sun. This means that solar energy can be harnessed for generations to come without diminishing resources.

Con: The Roof Space Sacrifice

Another issue with solar panels is are roof space requirements. Solar panels need ample space to be effective, so you must be willing to sacrifice roof space to install them. While this seems obvious, it must not be ignored in your decision. You must make sure solar panels are a practical option for the roof space you are working with.

Pro: Environmentally Friendly

If you have the sufficient space for solar panels, installing them will most definitely bring a positive impact to the environment. Unlike other conventional energy sources, solar panels do not cause pollution. This will benefit not only you, but generations to come. Solar panel installation requires some sacrifice, but has the ability to benefit our environment.

Con: Installation can be costly.

Installing Solar panels can be expensive. While solar panels save in the long run, the immediate cost must be taken into consideration. If you plan on staying in your current home for the long haul, solar panels are an appealing option, but you should be sure of it if you make the decision to install.

Pro: Long-Term Savings

Installation requires a lot of upfront costs, but it pays off as a long-term investment. Solar panels will decrease the amount of electricity you use; thus, decreasing the amount of money you spend on the electric bill. Over time, they will not only earn your money back, but allow you to profit off of the lessened energy usage.

As demonstrated above, there are both benefits and shortcomings to solar panel installation. Solar panels take up space, depend on sunlight, and can be costly to install. However, they are environmentally friendly, reduce energy usage, and draw from a virtually unlimited power source. If you consider this, and decide that solar panels are right for you, you must prepare your roof for installation. Roofs must be inspected, measured, and prepped before installation–and our Award Winning Contractors at AROCON Roofing and Construction is always here to help!
